Gold Winner Silver Winner: Bronze Winner: Remodeling a kitchen for under $50,000 is no small task. Grossmueller’s Design Consultants, Inc. of Washington, D.C., however, made the difficult look easy. They took an impossibly small 83-sq.-ft. space in a Silver Spring, Md. home and, by redoing the configuration of the first floor, expanded it to 120 sq. ft. Then they loaded the space with lots of thoughtful detail that met the clients’ goals, namely to update the kitchen, include a dishwasher and gain a bit more space. The old exterior door and neighboring window in the kitchen were shortened so that an old cast iron sink with its high backsplash could be set below. This allows a small adjoining space underneath to house a new, small dishwasher. The refrigerator is built into the cabinetry, and the range and hood have a prominent place across the kitchen. Simple cream-colored cabinetry with lit under-cabinet shelves, wood countertops and floors, and glass doors give the clients the country feel they desired. |
